Protection of Laboratory Animals

This message is for engineering services that support animal research facilities:

Recent incidences of heat control system failure have resulted in steam valves defaulting to full open position and overheating of animal holding rooms. This has led to serious loss of research. Consequences include animal loss, humane concerns, economic loss, and negative publicity.

Animal research facilities are extremely vulnerable to overheating because of the requirement for 10-15 non-recirculated air changes per hour, and the inability of animals to move to cooler areas when problems develop.

On a priority basis, please meet with your research staff to develop a system to protect laboratory animals from excessive heat caused by heating systems. The discussions should include:

  1. The default settings for valves in the heating system that serves the animal living area and the results of a system control failure. (Most heating systems fail in the open position and can overheat a building.)
  2. An emergency response team that can be alerted and quickly respond 24 hours/7 days/week.
  3. Alarm systems that are continuously monitored and periodically tested.
  4. Fire plans.

Questions can be directed to the Chief Veterinary Medical Officer.

R&D offices are advised to contact their medical center facility engineering staff, and their VMO/VMC.
