Page 1. Working with the Laboratory Dog, videotape (video CD)

This page is not the start of a web course, but rather provides information about a training videotape that has also been released as a video CD by the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare. The Working with the Laboratory Dog videotape/video CD covers basic procedures involving dogs. It includes information on canine biology, behavior, regulatory information, safety information, basic healthcare, restraint techniques, and methods for performing injections and blood collections from common sites. The content in the videotape is intended for both VA and non-VA users.

Courtesy of the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), you may view the complete tape as streaming video over the web. Once at OLAW's video streaming site, choose the "Working with the Laboratory Dog" link. A link to this site is provided on the last page of this lesson, but if you want to go there now and skip information on the exam questions for the tape and how to obtain a copy, click here.

Otherwise, please click on the forward arrow above.

Page 2. Obtaining a Copy

If you are a VA staff member, your Research Service should have at least one copy of the videotape already. If additional copies are needed, please ask a VA research administrator to send a message to michael.fallon@va.gov.

Other institutions can obtain copies of the videotape from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), a VA partner in producing the tape. Copies of the video CD version may be available from OLAW.

Please click on the forward arrow above.

Page 3. Videotape Production

This videotape was produced as part of the Working with Laboratory Animals educational series for investigators by the VA Employee Education Service. Funds were provided by the Medical Research Service in the VA Office of Research and Development, and by a non-profit charitable organization, in partnership with AALAS.

The list of authoring and review credits are shown at the end of the videotape.

Page 4. The Examination Questions

To take the exam that covers the material in this videotape, click on the Web Courses and Exams link at the top right of this page.

If you would like to practice answering all of the questions in the exam pool, you can do so by advancing through the questions, beginning with the next screen. You will be shown the correct answer for each question, but your responses are not recorded or tallied. Keep in mind that you still pass the exam to receive credit for the course, and subsequently be able to print a certificate of completion for it.

Any error reports, bug reports, or suggestions for improvement are appreciated. Submit them by clicking on the Submit Comment link at above right, or send them to michael.fallon@va.gov.

You may now view the questions in the exam pool by clicking on the forward arrow, go back to the web courses and exams menu, submit a comment, go to the ResearchTraining home page, log off by clicking the link at the top right of this page, or go to the OLAW streaming video site to view the tape by clicking here.
