Gerbils should not be fed a high fat diet because of their propensity for developing high blood cholesterol and obesity. They are typically fed a standard rodent chow of 16-20% protein. Treats like sunflower seeds are best avoided because of their high fat content and poor nutrition. When nutrition is poor, gerbils will consume more of their feces (copraphagy).
