Feeding behavior

Gerbils, especially females, will hoard food in sites within the cage.

Gerbils are naturally coprophagic (consume their feces). This behavior is more common when diet quality is poor. Coprophagy is minimal when gerbils are fed a typical laboratory rodent diet.
