Behavioral characteristics

Gerbils are active and will resist being caught. They are also docile and easily handled without biting. Day and night, they actively dig in bedding and explore their environment.

They are social animals which live peacefully in colonies established before animals reach puberty. Fighting among unfamiliar adults or in crowded conditions may result in death.

Gerbils thump the floor with their rear legs as an expression of excitement, fright, or aggression. They may thump repeatedly, making a drumming sound.
